Faculty of Engineering Department of Civil Engineering and Urban Design

Message from the Dean

Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of Department of Civil Engineering and Urban Design

Yukikazu Yamaguchi

Urban design engineering is the study of developing and managing social infrastructure.

Urban design engineering has three roles.
• Protecting national security and human lives • Supporting socio-economic activities • Creating a sustainable future

The curriculum of this department consists of the fields of design and planning, structure, concrete and materials, geotechnical engineering, rivers and coastal areas, and common areas that are necessary for studying these specialized fields.
We, the faculty and staff, will fully support all of our students' endeavors.
Don't be afraid of failure; challenge yourself in things that interest you, and make your university life a fruitful one.

I sincerely look forward to seeing all of you students succeed.

FeatureFeatures

Urban design engineering is a system of academic and technical fields that takes into consideration the natural environment, history, and culture of the region, and is necessary for constructing urban infrastructure such as roads, bridges, ports, and rivers that support our lives, developing urban spaces, and using these safely, conveniently, comfortably, and effectively. "In accordance with the department's educational philosophy, the Department of Department of Civil Engineering and Urban Design provides a rich curriculum in five areas that form the backbone of the academic and technical fields necessary to achieve the learning and educational goals aimed at cultivating highly specialized engineers who will be useful to society," and provides consistent, detailed instruction not only through graduation but also through to employment, taking into consideration the acquisition of a wide range of qualifications and exam eligibility.

  1. It is possible to acquire advanced specialized skills and difficult qualifications

With a history spanning over 70 years and home to one of the largest structural testing centers in Western Japan, the Department of Department of Civil Engineering and Urban Design provides education that aims to cultivate advanced specialized skills and difficult-to-obtain qualifications. The curriculum is based on a JABEE-accredited educational program, and graduates can obtain the JABEE Certified Engineer qualification.

  2. Cultivating talent to design urban spaces

The academic and technological fields of urban design engineering play an extremely important role in realizing a sustainable society, and securing and nurturing the human resources who will take on this role is one of the major issues facing society, given the current situation of a declining birthrate. Our department trains human resources who have the solid knowledge, technology, and ambition to realize a sustainable society and who can design urban spaces.

  3. Six comprehensive areas of expertise

The school has six specialized fields (general, design and planning, structure, concrete and materials, ground, and rivers and coasts), and offers a wide range of specialized education. Many classes involve group work, and the school focuses on strengthening non-cognitive skills such as practical skills, problem-solving and presentation skills, and communication skills.

Educational Philosophy

The Department of Department of Civil Engineering and Urban Design aims to train engineers who are "broad-based and able to make decisions from a comprehensive perspective that looks to the future, who have cutting-edge technology and advanced specialized knowledge in urban design engineering, non-cognitive abilities such as practical ability and communication skills, and an international outlook, who are able to adapt to a changing society and constantly take on challenges" (the ideal engineer).

Learning and Educational Goals

(A) To acquire basic academic skills from a comprehensive perspective and to develop a broad perspective and sound judgment skills (basic academic skills, judgment skills).
(B) Be aware of the social contributions of science and technology and their impact on the local environment, and acquire the skills to be an autonomous engineer with a sense of self-realization and personal responsibility (engineer ethics).
(C) Acquire fundamental knowledge of natural sciences, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, earth science, and biology, as well as information technology (natural sciences and information processing).
(D) Students will master the contents of the specialized fields of the Department of Department of Civil Engineering and Urban Design(design and planning, structural engineering, concrete and materials, ground engineering, and river and coastal engineering) and acquire specialized knowledge and skills related to the development of social infrastructure and the conservation of urban and global environments (specialized knowledge, specialized skills).
(E) To develop cooperation skills, leadership skills, and the ability to carry out tasks in a planned manner, as well as the ability to observe, understand, consider, and explain (practical skills).
(F) Acquire the design and presentation skills to grasp, organize, and solve problems faced by society by utilizing specialized knowledge and skills in a multifaceted and comprehensive manner (problem-solving ability, presentation ability).
(G) Acquire basic communication skills and manners as a working member of society (communication skills).
(H) Acquire an international sensibility and international outlook that can respond to the age of globalization (international outlook).
(I) Acquire a lifelong attitude of continuing to learn, the habit of self-study, and the ability to solve problems in response to changes in societal demands (lifelong self-learning).

Engineering Ethics Education Policy of the Department of Department of Civil Engineering and Urban Design

  • In the Career Design course (first year), students are provided with knowledge of common basic matters and are made aware of ethical issues.
  • We offer a course on engineering ethics (3rd year) and have students think about ethical issues in specialized subjects (2nd to 4th years) using cases related to the content of those subjects.
  • During their graduation research (fourth year), students are required to consider ethical issues such as citing research papers (copyright, patent rights, etc.).
