Faculty of Engineering Division of Human Sciences

Message from the Head of School

Faculty of Engineering of Division of Human Sciences

Tomoko Tsujimoto

"Division of Human Sciences" examines humans from various perspectives

The Division of Human Sciences conducts education and research that examines humans from various perspectives, and is made up of three laboratories: Humanities and Social Sciences, Languages, and Health and Physical Education.
The Humanities and Social Sciences Laboratory, which studies the cultures and societies that humanity has created, the Language Laboratory, which conducts research on the diversity of various languages and cultures, and the Health and Physical Education Laboratory, which studies the need for physical activity related to health, work together every day to provide education with the aim of training engineers who can thrive in the real world.
In order to utilize the specialized knowledge and skills acquired in specialized departments after graduation, it is first necessary to deepen one's understanding of human beings and society. Nowadays, there is also a demand for cross-disciplinary knowledge, skills, and problem-solving abilities. It is the mission of our faculty in the Department of Division of Human Sciences to help students achieve this.

FeatureFeatures

The distinctive feature of the Division of Human Sciences is that it conducts education and research that considers humans comprehensively from various perspectives.
In recent years, the use of big data and AI, ICT (Information and Communication Technology), IoT (Internet of Things), etc. have become hot topics in the field of engineering, but if we go back to the origins of manufacturing, what is being questioned is nothing other than the state of humans and society.
In that sense, it goes without saying that economic rationality after considering the costs and benefits in product development and ethical appropriateness in line with compliance are important, but in order to understand why bullet trains and airplanes have the shapes they do today, it is also essential to know the historical changes that have occurred in the past. In addition, when explaining creative works, a logical explanation is required, and considering the recent rapid progress of globalization, it is necessary to acquire not only Japanese but also a foreign language. Studying a foreign language is essential for deepening understanding of different cultures and for cultivating an attitude of accepting and respecting diversity.
Furthermore, in today's society where the birthrate is declining and the population is aging, it is more important than anything else to pay attention to one's own health and maintain and improve one's lifestyle and exercise habits in order to lead an independent and healthy life throughout one's life.
Knowledge about people and society, learning a foreign language, and participating in physical exercise and sports all contribute to building good human relationships and will also enable students to more smoothly utilize the specialized knowledge and skills they have acquired in specialized departments in society after graduation.

  1. Humanities and Social Sciences

The staff in the Humanities and Social Sciences Lab specialize in philosophy and ethics, art history, Japanese language, economics, psychology, and history. In order to utilize the engineering knowledge and skills they have acquired in their specialized fields in society, it is necessary to have a broad perspective. Our staff aims to develop human resources who can play an active role in a wide range of fields by gaining a deep understanding of the cultures and societies that humanity has created and utilizing that knowledge.

  2. Language

At the Faculty of Engineering, the English and Chinese language laboratories play a central role in nurturing engineers who can contribute to the international community in the future. Students learn about the diversity of various languages and cultures, and strive to improve their broad perspective and communication skills in foreign languages, which are necessary for engineers who will be active in the global era. With this as a foundation, we aim to acquire practical foreign languages in order to disseminate valuable research based on the advanced specialized knowledge and technology acquired in the specialized education at the Faculty of Faculty of Engineering to the world.

  3. Physical Education

This laboratory is mainly responsible for general education for the Faculty of Faculty of Engineering, and provides health education centered on physical activity. Our laboratory studies the necessity of health-related physical activity from an interdisciplinary perspective, and reflects the results in education. In the Health and Physical Education Laboratory, we divide the content of classes into two major categories: "Health and Physical Education I, II," which includes compulsory content that we want all students to learn, and "Lifelong Sports I, II," which includes optional content that meets the needs of students, and we aim to clarify the course goals and philosophy.
