Faculty of Information Science and Technology Department of Network Design

Message from the Dean

Head of the Department of Department of Network Design of Faculty of Information Science and Technology

Shigeyuki Sakazawa

We train information specialists with expertise in security and communications software.

The Department of Network Design , Faculty of Information Science, Osaka Institute of Technology Faculty of Information Science and Technology , was established in 2007 as the Department of Information Networks at the Hirakata Campus. This was the year that the iPhone was first released, and the beginning of an era in which communication was possible with anyone, anywhere, anytime. In 2019, the department changed its name to the Department of Network Design.
In the Department of Network Design, we provide basic education in mathematics, technical document literacy, and programming in common with other departments in the Faculty of Information Science and Technology, so that students can acquire a solid foundation in this field during their first and second years. In terms of specialized education, we focus on information security education, as well as the study of infrastructure construction and management technology for information and communication networks that support the information society and related Faculty of Information Science and Technology, and provide a comprehensive curriculum ranging from basic to applied and practical exercises. Furthermore, many students take on the challenge of cultivating practical skills as working adults, such as participating in off-campus programming contests across departments in the Faculty of Information Science, participating in PBL activities in collaboration with local governments and chambers of commerce, and speaking at technical talk events with many working adults in the audience.
In April 2025, the DX Field will be opened on the Hirakata Campus as a testing ground for digital transformation using drones and IoT, and students from the Department of Network Design will participate in education, research, and project activities using the facility, so they will graduate with even more applied and practical skills. We hope you will look forward to the growth of our current students and the success of our graduates.

FeatureFeatures

Network and communication technologies, such as smartphones and online shopping, have become indispensable in our lives.
In the Department of Network Design, students learn the basics of information technology, which is the lifeline of all fields and industries, and through comprehensive exercises, acquire "practical technology" to support modern society. We foster information specialists with a strong knowledge of security and communication software.

  1. Develop practical skills that can be used in society through lectures on cutting-edge knowledge and comprehensive exercises

Practical learning is important when learning about security and communication software. Students will improve their skills through a variety of exercises, such as making programmable LEGO block robots autonomously, creating websites, and learning countermeasures against cyber attacks.

  2. Specialized courses that add to your specialization

Cybersecurity - Students will learn more specialized skills through courses that teach the fundamentals of security-conscious system design and courses that teach the fundamentals of designing communication systems, such as easier-to-use SNS.

  3. It leads to skill improvement!
Immediately put into practice what you learn in class

We place the utmost importance on the "let's give it a try" attitude, and encourage students to participate in events and present their graduation research at academic conferences.
You can challenge infinite possibilities together with your teachers, seniors, peers, and juniors.

Image analysis technology for security and monitoring using surveillance camera footage is also being used in graduation research in other departments, including the Department of Real World Computing.
  • Can Department of Network Design students use the DX field?
You can use it if you join a laboratory conducting related research or if you are involved in a student project related to drones or robots.
  • When students in the Department of Network Design are assigned to a laboratory, which laboratory can they choose?
The faculty members from the Department of Network Design are still in the Faculty of Information Science and Technology, so you will basically be asked to choose one of their laboratories to apply to.
