Those currently receiving benefits

1. Report of enrollment (required procedure)

Recipients of the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) scholarship are required to submit a report of their enrollment status once a year (April) through "Scholarnet Personal." If you do not submit your report by the deadline, your scholarship payment will stop. You will be notified by UNIPA when the procedure is due.

2. Eligibility Certification (Academic)

At the end of each academic year (March), an "eligibility assessment" will be conducted to determine whether or not the scholarship can be continued based on the academic performance during the year. If the academic performance (number of credits earned at the end of the academic year and Y-GPA value) is deemed to be inappropriate for the scholarship, the student will be given one of the following measures: "Warning," "Suspension," or "Cancellation (Termination)." In addition, if the student's academic performance is extremely poor and there is no unavoidable reason such as disaster, injury, illness, or other unavoidable circumstances, the student will be required to return the scholarship that was provided and any reduced or exempted tuition fees.

3. Eligibility Certification (Households)

Every year around October, the Japan Student Services Organization will check the household's financial situation based on the income of the scholarship recipient and the breadwinner, resident tax information (My Number submitted at the time of application), etc., and will review the support category. No special procedures are required, but as a result of the review, the scholarship support category may change, which may result in a change in the amount of the grant scholarship payment from October, or the scholarship may be stopped. Similarly, the amount of exemptions and reductions for tuition fees will also change from October based on the review of the grant scholarship support category. The support category can be checked on "Scholarnet Personal".

4. Various change procedures

If you wish to transfer (withdraw or take a leave of absence), please be sure to notify the scholarship office. You will need to submit the appropriate form for each change.

Private foundation scholarships and local government scholarships

There are scholarships offered by private scholarship foundations and local public foundations. Among them, there are "university recommendation type" that requires a recommendation from a university, and "self-application type" that allows you to freely apply to the foundation of your choice. "University recommendation type" is mainly a grant type, while "general application type" can be a grant type or a loan type.

Private scholarships based on university recommendations

Advance registration is required for applications to "university recommendation type" scholarship foundations. After an on-campus interview and selection process, students will be recommended to each foundation. The final decision on whether or not they will be accepted will be made by the selection process of each foundation. Please register with the understanding that even after being accepted, you will be required to fulfill the obligations imposed by each foundation (participating in events, submitting reports, etc.).

How to register

The registration period for new students is immediately after enrollment, and for non-new students it is around November of the previous year. UNIPA will notify you, so please be careful not to miss the registration period.

Registration qualifications (application guidelines)

  1. Regular undergraduate and graduate students (excluding international students)
  2. Freshman undergraduates: high school GPA of 3.5 or higher 2nd to 4th year undergraduates: T-GPA of 2.6 or higher Graduate students: undergraduate T-GPA of 2.6 or higher *Application guidelines may change depending on the year. *Generally, if your family is not considered to be in financial difficulty, your chances of being recommended are significantly lower.
*Those who are receiving a grant-based scholarship from the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) may also register, but please note that some scholarship foundations may not be able to recommend students.

Scholarship Q&A (Frequently Asked Questions)

*On this page, Japan Student Services Organization will be referred to as "JASSO."

About scholarships in general

  • 1-1 I would like to use the money for preparations before enrollment and to pay the first semester tuition fees. Are there any lump-sum enrollment loans available?
The university does not offer loans at the time of enrolment, so the money cannot be used to cover payments before enrolment.
In addition, JASSO offers a "special increased loan scholarship at the time of admission" that increases the amount of the interest-bearing scholarship at the time of the first transfer, but even if you are approved for the loan, the first transfer will be made after you enroll, so you will not be able to receive the scholarship before you enroll. Please consider using an educational loan or other means to cover the payment before you enroll.
  • 1-2 My parents asked me to borrow a scholarship. / My child asked me to look into it.
Before applying, students should understand the outline of the system (repayment, continuation conditions, etc.). In particular, for loan scholarships, students are obligated to repay the loan after the loan ends, so students should understand the outline of the system and discuss the loan amount with their guarantor. If you have any questions, please contact the relevant office.
  • 1-3 If I apply, will I definitely be accepted?
No. Each scholarship has its own application qualifications and selection criteria, so not all applicants will be accepted.
  • 1-4 I was expelled due to non-payment of tuition fees. Can I still receive a scholarship?
You will not be able to receive scholarships. Scholarships from JASSO and private organizations will be suspended from the month following the date of expulsion. You will not be paid the GPA/Terasaki Scholarship for the semester you were expelled. All scholarships will not be reinstated unless the reason for expulsion is resolved.
Please note that you will need to complete the necessary procedures to apply for the JASSO scholarship, so please inquire at the relevant office.
  • 1-5 I have been accepted as a scholarship student, but I plan to study abroad in the second semester. What will happen to my scholarship?
The handling of scholarships will differ depending on the period of study abroad, the study abroad destination, changes in student status during the study abroad, and whether or not you wish to receive a loan during the study abroad period. For details, please contact the relevant office.

About the application

[Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)]

  • 2-1 I would like to take advantage of the new support system for higher education (tuition reduction, etc.). How can I apply?
Please apply for the JASSO scholarship. When applying, you will be asked to submit an "Application for Tuition Reduction, etc.", so please make sure to submit it. If you are accepted for the scholarship, you will also be able to receive a tuition reduction. Applications are accepted at universities every spring and fall. Please check the portal site carefully so that you do not miss the application period.
  • 2-2 How much income does a household breadwinner need to receive a grant scholarship?
To check the income standards, please use the "Education Funding Simulator" on the JASSO website, which will give you a rough guide by entering your household composition and income situation.

  • 2-3 The income criteria will be determined by JASSO based on resident tax information obtained from the My Number, but for what period of income will the review cover?
Since tax information is updated by local governments around June each year, for regular recruitment in the spring, income from January to December of the year before the application will be reviewed, and for the second recruitment in the fall, income from January to December of the year before the application will be reviewed.

  • 2-4 I have parents, but my mother is a full-time housewife and has no income. Who will be the breadwinner?
If you have parents, in principle, both parents are the ones who are the breadwinners regardless of whether they have an income or not. In the case of a single-parent household, in principle, that person is the breadwinner. If you have any questions about your individual case, please contact the relevant office.
  • 2-5 I am currently using an interest-bearing “Type 2” scholarship loan. Can I change to the interest-free “Type 1”?
You can reapply and change your status if you are accepted as a "Type 1" candidate.

  • 2-6 Can I apply for the JASSO scholarship at any time?
No. We will announce the application period on our university website and UNIPA, so please be careful not to miss it.
Application period for grant scholarships: Regular recruitment in spring (around April) and second recruitment in autumn (around September)
Application period for loan scholarships: Spring (around April) *If there is a second recruitment in the fall, we will announce it.
In addition, in the event of a sudden change in household finances (death of the breadwinner, loss of job, etc.), there are emergency/emergency assistance programs (loans) and emergency assistance programs (benefits) for sudden changes in household finances that accept applications on a case-by-case basis. For more information, please contact the relevant office.

[Campus Scholarships]

  • 2-7 I am currently in my first year and am receiving the JASSO scholarship. Can I apply for the "Excellent Academic Scholarship" in my second year? Can I receive both?
If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can apply. If you are accepted, you can receive both grants.
The "Academic Excellence Scholarship" is awarded for one year, and applications must be made every year, so it is possible to reduce the monthly JASSO scholarship amount only in the year in which you are accepted.
  • 2-8 I was awarded a scholarship for outstanding academic performance last year, but was not awarded this year. I have maintained my grades and my family's financial situation has not changed much, so why?
For scholarships for outstanding academic achievement, there is a limit to the number of places available. If many students who meet the criteria apply, such as those with better grades than last year or those whose family finances are more difficult, the borderline for acceptance can change significantly, so you may not be accepted even if your circumstances are the same as last year.
  • 2-9 If my application is rejected, will I be told the reason?
We will not be able to answer any inquiries regarding the selection results, nor will we be able to return any submitted materials.

About scholarships currently being awarded or loaned

[Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)]

  • 3-1 I have been accepted for a grant scholarship and a Type 1 loan scholarship, but the Type 1 scholarship payment has not yet been transferred.
If you are accepted to receive both a grant scholarship and a Type 1 loan scholarship, the amount of the Type 1 scholarship will be limited.
  • 3-2 When I was first accepted, I was receiving the scholarship in Category III, but I received a notice that my category will change. Why is my category changing?
Every year, JASSO reviews the support category for grant scholarships based on household standards, taking into account the income of the student and the breadwinner, resident tax information, etc. As a result of this review, scholarship payments may be stopped or the amount of the payment may change from October.

  • 3-3 I have been accepted for a grant scholarship and have applied for it since I will be commuting away from home, but I have not yet received the monthly payment for my stay away from home.
The monthly fee for commuting away from home will be transferred to you after you have been accepted and you have submitted proof that you are commuting away from home (such as a copy of your apartment rental contract) and the transfer will be made to you after the institution has completed its review. The difference between the month that you became "commuting away from home" and the month that the payment was made will be transferred to you in one lump sum.

  • 3-4 I have been accepted for a loan scholarship. Why is the amount transferred different from the amount I applied for?
Have you selected the institutional guarantee system? If you select the institutional guarantee system, the guarantee fee will be deducted from the monthly transfer amount.
  • 3-5 My scholarship payment for this month (April and May) has not been transferred.
The transfer dates will be delayed in April and May.

  • 3-6 Is it true that after being accepted as a scholarship student, if my grades are poor, my scholarship will be terminated?
It is true. If your academic performance is extremely poor or you have repeated a year, your scholarship will be "suspended" or "cancelled (terminated)". Also, if you receive a "warning" for two consecutive years in a grant scholarship, your scholarship will be "suspended" or "cancelled (terminated)". Furthermore, if your academic performance is extremely poor and there are no other unavoidable reasons such as disaster, injury, or illness, you will be asked to return the scholarship and any reduced or exempted tuition fees, so please make an effort to maintain good grades.
  • 3-7 I am currently receiving a scholarship. Is there any procedure I need to follow?
The procedure is required mainly in the following cases, so please apply immediately at the relevant office.
    1. Monthly fee change [loan only]
    2. Change account
    3. Withdrawal/Expulsion (Your scholarship will need to be suspended, so please be sure to come in for the procedure)
    4. Taking a leave of absence (You will need to suspend your scholarship, so please be sure to come in to complete the necessary procedures)
    5. Declining (We recommend that you decline as soon as possible, especially if you no longer need the loan.)
To continue receiving the JASSO scholarship, you must complete the renewal procedure every January. In addition, scholarship recipients must report their enrollment status every April. Recipients will be notified on UNIPA and on the bulletin board, so please be sure to complete the procedure.
  • 3-8 My grant scholarship has been removed from the support category and I am no longer receiving the scholarship. Do I still need to submit an enrollment report?
Once you become a grant scholarship student, you will be required to report your enrollment status while you are enrolled.
  • 3-9 I don't know my scholarship number.
This is printed on the "Scholarship Certificate" and "Repayment Pledge" that are given to you during the recruitment process.
  • 3-10 I cannot log in to Scholarnet Personal.
Scholarnet for new applications and Scholarnet Personal used by scholarship recipients are separate sites. If you have never logged in before, please click on "New Registration". If you have forgotten your user ID or password, please click on the "Forgot User ID or Password" button.

About scholarships after the loan period ends

[Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)]

  • 4-1 I was receiving a scholarship, but I dropped out (was expelled). Are there any procedures I need to follow?
You will need to submit a "transfer request," so please apply at the relevant office.
After that, we will send you the documents for the procedure to return the scholarship. After receiving the documents, please complete the procedure (relay account opening procedure) promptly. Please note that if you delay the procedure, your return may be treated as overdue.
  • 4-2 I received a scholarship loan. Can I repay it early?
You can repay the entire amount or a portion of it in advance. Please refer to the "Repayment Guide" that will be distributed after the end of the loan period and follow the procedures yourself. However, those who are currently receiving a JASSO scholarship cannot repay in advance.
  • 4-3 I am planning to make a lump-sum repayment early. Do I need to apply for a relay account?
Anyone who received a loan must apply to join. (Excluding those whose Type 1 scholarship total was 0 yen due to adjustments to concurrent scholarships and other factors.)
  • 4-4 I received a demand letter from JASSO for repayment of my scholarship even though I am still enrolled in school. What should I do?
You can defer repayment until graduation by completing the "Student Status Deferral Application" procedure on Scholarnet Personal or by submitting the required "Student Status Notification" to the relevant office.
  • 4-5 I am receiving a scholarship. I plan to go to graduate school after graduation. When do I start repaying the loan?
If you are a JASSO scholarship recipient who advances to graduate school or transfers to another university, you can receive a deferral of repayment during your enrollment by submitting a "Request for Deferral of Enrollment" or "Notification of Enrollment" to the school you will be attending. Repayment will begin after you complete your graduate studies or graduate from the other university.
