International Exchange About the International Exchange Program

About the International Exchange Program (OIT Study Abroad Programs for OIT Students)

In modern society, not only are companies transferring their production bases overseas and markets becoming borderless, but "globalization" is permeating all kinds of activities. In our university's human resource development, we consider responding to "globalization" to be the most important issue.
As a university with a focus on science and engineering, we have set the following three goals for "developing global human resources."
Goals of Global Human Resource Development

  1. Promoting sustainable international collaboration through the synergistic effects of expanding educational programs and research exchanges
  2. To create a campus environment where diverse cultures can coexist and to raise awareness among students, faculty and staff.
  3. Actively give back the results of our global expansion to local and international communities
In order to achieve the above goals, our university offers a variety of overseas study programs, with an emphasis on the following points:
Overseas Study Program

  1. Raising awareness of the "global society" from the time of enrollment
  2. To provide a program that gradually becomes more advanced as students progress through the grades.
  3. Incorporating learning through hands-on experience of working with students from overseas

Participation model for international exchange programs

Our university encourages students to participate in multiple international exchange programs and gradually develop into global talent.
Below are some examples of program participation combinations to help you make your future plans.

1. Step up from basic to advanced level

Students will participate in language training programs early in their undergraduate studies to improve their language skills and intercultural understanding, then experience practical English-language activities such as international PBL, and finally engage in more specialized research activities such as overseas research support programs.

2. Strengthening capabilities based on current circumstances

If you participate in a higher-level program but feel that your language skills are lacking, you can develop your skills in a basic-level program and then aim to participate in a higher-level program.

3. Participate in as many programs as possible

If you want to gain as much international exchange experience as possible, for example because you want to work overseas in the future, you can participate in multiple programs.
At the advanced level, you can combine various activities such as research, internships and coursework at partner universities.

Preparation for long-term study abroad

If you are aiming to participate in a program that allows long-term study abroad (overseas research support, IA training, long-term exchange study abroad, etc.), start collecting information and making plans to study abroad from your early years. A certain level of language ability and knowledge of a specialized field is required to apply. In parallel with your studies in your faculty or department, please start improving your language skills and making preparations from an early stage.

*Things that need to be included in a study abroad plan: 1) Motivation and purpose for participating, 2) Type of program, study abroad destination, 3) Study abroad time and duration, 4) Required language ability, 5) Cost, 6) Consent of guardians and supervisor, etc.

Inquiries regarding participation in international exchange programs

For enquiries regarding international exchange programs, please contact the International Center.

STEP1 Language training and cultural experience programs
(Language Training Program/
Overseas Culture Experience Program)

During the summer and spring holidays, the International Center cooperates with overseas partner schools to run language training programs in English-speaking countries and cultural experience programs in Asian countries and regions. Participation does not require any language ability.

Language Training Program

This is a program where students take intensive language training for 1-4 weeks at language schools or overseas partner schools during the summer and spring holidays. By choosing the course of your choice, such as conversation-focused or comprehensive ability training, you can expect to improve your expressiveness and motivation. Undergraduate students can receive credits for "overseas language training" if they meet certain conditions.

STEP2
STEP3
International PBL Program
(International PBL Program)

This program is aimed primarily at second- and third-year undergraduate students and involves PBL (Project-Based Learning) with overseas universities. For about one week to two months (the period varies depending on the faculty and department), students form mixed teams with overseas students and work on common tasks tailored to their specialization while communicating in English. By working with people with different values, a wide range of ideas are generated and a variety of skills are acquired.

Program Features

PBL aims to bring out the diverse abilities of students (problem-solving ability, creativity, teamwork, time management, communication, leadership, etc.) by having them work on given tasks under limited conditions. The aim is for students to experience the results of PBL through global exchange and at the same time feel diversity.

The significance of conducting international PBL

By working on problems together with people who have different values from Japanese people, a wide variety of unexpected ideas are born. The PBL process is innovation itself. Assuming that globalization will continue to progress in the future, our university has decided that PBL with international students who have different values would be effective, and started this program in 2013.
One of the goals of nurturing global human resources that society desires is "problem-solving ability," and the international PBL implemented by our university is perfectly aligned with this purpose.

Initiatives for SDGs

You may have heard the term SDGs a lot recently. It stands for "Sustainable Development Goals." SDGs is a term referring to 17 goals adopted by the United Nations (193 member states) in September 2015 to solve global issues such as poverty and climate change, and is a common promise for all humankind to achieve by 2030. Everyone needs to contribute to achieve the SDGs.

Universities play a central role in promoting regional and national innovation through research, discovery, knowledge creation and implementation. The liberal arts, specialized knowledge and skills you learn at university are connected to solving all problems, and by participating in capacity development activities such as PBL, where young people from Japan and abroad who have a desire to realize a better society in line with the purpose of the SDGs gather, you can have an even greater impact on global development.

In international PBL, you will work with students from overseas to tackle common global issues facing local communities. Such experiences will be an opportunity to change your awareness and behavior. From 2020, our university will set the SDGs as the common theme for international PBL, so take this opportunity to think about what each of you can do for the world.

Comments from IAESTE internship students

Paulista State University of Sao Paulo (Brazil)

For eight weeks, I researched the theme of "Development of sustainable building materials such as cement and blocks." I received advice from upperclassmen I met there and wrote a thesis on "Intercultural comparison of sustainable architecture between Brazil and Japan." Through the training, I became interested in the current state of environmentally friendly architecture in Japan compared to other countries, and at the same time, I learned that construction waste has a significant impact on the environment, which made me want to design buildings that are also functional in the future. On the weekends, I went to see the World Heritage Site Iguazu Falls and went to see parades and live performances in the city with students from various countries, making many memories that can only be experienced locally.
Living on the other side of the world was not always easier or more comfortable than I had imagined, but when I faced a language barrier, I was able to proactively use English and think of ways to solve the problem myself, which I feel is a big step forward. If you are even slightly hesitant about participating, I think you should give it a try.

The plan was to conduct an experiment using an electric discharge machine under the guidance of the professor in charge for about five weeks, and compile statistics on the results using the Taguchi Method, a quality control method. The equipment broke down midway and the experiment could not be completed, but the collaborative work in pairs with Indian students went smoothly. In addition, an event called International Week was held locally, where the students were able to eat traditional Indian food and play kabaddi, the national sport of India.
I realized that in order to effectively communicate about Japan to people from other countries in English, I need to have a deeper understanding of my own country's culture and customs, so I decided to learn more about Japanese culture, politics, etc. in the future.

  4. Tuition fees during the study abroad period:
    (A) If you take a leave of absence, you will be required to pay enrollment fees (60,000 yen per semester, 120,000 yen per year) to the university. (To graduate from the university, you must be enrolled for four years, and the period of leave of absence will not be counted.)
    (b) If you do not take a leave of absence, you will continue to pay tuition fees to the University as usual during the study abroad period. (Whether you can study abroad without taking a leave of absence will depend on each student's situation. Please make sure that this is possible within the curriculum of your faculty or graduate school.)
    (c) Tuition fees at the host university will be waived (students will be responsible for the cost of English classes at partner universities in the United States and Canada).
  5. Continuing your studies at the University:
One of the conditions for application is to continue your studies at our university after completing your study abroad.
  6. Credit Accreditation:
If the course is deemed relevant to courses offered by the University, up to 30 credits may be included in the graduation credits for undergraduate students. For graduate students, this is subject to the regulations of each graduate school.
  7. Cost assistance
    • We will support the actual cost of round-trip economy class airfare up to the maximum amount set by the International Center for each country and region.
    • If you are studying abroad to take specialized courses or participate in a laboratory internship, you may be provided with an additional JASSO scholarship (80,000-120,000 yen per month).
*For more information about the maximum amount per country and JASSO scholarships, please contact the International Center.
  8. Other expenses:
Each participant will be responsible for their own local transportation costs, living expenses (food, dormitory fees, etc.), overseas travel insurance, passport and visa fees, and other procedural costs.

This is a public-private partnership study abroad support program that began in 2014. It plans to send about 10,000 high school and university students as exchange students over the seven years up to 2020. If the study abroad plan involves practical activities in the local area, it can be used in conjunction with our university's long-term exchange program.

Comments from long-term exchange students

Study abroad location: University of San Jose Recoletos (Philippines)
Period: March 2024 to February 2025
I studied abroad at University of San Jose Retreats in Cebu, Philippines (USJ-R) from March 2024 to February 2025.
At USJ-R, I mainly took English language classes and attended English classes with local students. In addition to English language study, there were many events and religious events, and I was able to get deeply involved in the Philippine lifestyle and culture, which was a valuable experience. Many of the local students came from far away to study, and I felt that they were taking their studies more seriously than Japanese students. Therefore, when I showed my sincere efforts to study English, the people around me offered me a hand, so I hope that anyone who is seriously considering studying abroad will do their best.

[2nd year, Graduate School of Intellectual Property]

Study abroad: Daejeon University (South Korea)
Period: March 2024 to January 2025
In the first semester, I learned the basics of Korean at Daejeon University's Korean Language Education Center, and since I reached an intermediate level, in the second semester I took classes with Korean students. The Korean Language Education Center is located on campus, and all classes were conducted in Korean. Although I always prepared and reviewed before taking classes, I found it difficult, but before returning home I reached a level where I could live alone in Korea, which gave me the confidence to take on new challenges in the future.

[2nd year student, Department of Department of System Design, Faculty of Robotics and Design Engineering]

I decided to participate in this long-term exchange program after participating in the Daejeon University cultural experience program (about 3 weeks) in the summer. Living in Korea for a long period of time after learning about the university's atmosphere and environment in advance allowed me to live my long-term study abroad life with peace of mind. I was able to feel close to languages other than Korean through events such as sports tournaments, as well as being a member of the "talking club" and teaching Japanese to students in the Japanese language department once a week. There was a dormitory (one room for three people) and a convenience store on the university campus, so life was very convenient.

[2nd year student, Department of Spatial Faculty of Robotics and Design Department of Design and Architecture ]

Study abroad destination: National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan)
Period: February 2024 to January 2025
At Taipei University of Science and Technology, I studied patents and the Unfair Competition Prevention Act. I also took MBA classes, challenging myself with high-level classes that required discussions in English. There were many native English-speaking students, and it was very stimulating to learn deeply about different cultures and political backgrounds. I took classes with international students from not only Taiwan but also all over the world, and was able to broaden my international perspective. In addition, I did an internship at a local patent office, and realized the importance of knowledge while gaining practical experience. Overseas, I was able to expand my network and learn various things by acting proactively and communicating actively. In the student dormitory, I lived with students from various countries, came into contact with different cultures and values, and gained valuable experiences that led to my personal growth.
