About course enrollment

Course Registration

A woman taking a class
Unlike high school, at university, you must apply for and receive permission for the courses you wish to take each year (in the first year, there is a "model course" where you take some courses according to the class timetable). This procedure is called "course registration application." Please note that if you neglect to register for courses, your registration will be invalid even if you attend classes and get good grades on exams. The same applies if you apply in violation of the school rules, course registration regulations, and other regulations and do not meet the conditions for permission.
At the course registration guidance session held in late March or early April each year prior to the course registration application period, a "Course Registration Guidelines" will be distributed. Please read this guide carefully and make sure you understand all the important points and rules regarding the application in order to follow the correct application procedures.
The maximum number of credits that can be applied for in a year is 44. However, for students enrolled in the Faculty of Intellectual Property in 2017 or earlier, the maximum number is 48, and for students enrolled in the Faculty of Faculty of Robotics and Design in 2021 or earlier, the maximum number is 48.
*Transfer students (second year or above) and students transferring to other faculties/departments are limited to 56 credits in their first year only.

Academic achievement

Academic grades are evaluated based on your exam results as well as your daily study habits. Therefore, regular grades are especially important for classes where attendance is important, such as foreign languages, as well as for classes where exams are not held, such as experiments and technical drawing.

Assessment criteria and display of academic achievement

The grading criteria are as follows, with grades of " S ", " A ", " B ", " C ", " D " and " G " being considered passing grades and the appropriate number of credits being awarded.
In addition, the grades for courses for which credits have been granted through transfer or other reasons will be shown as " N " and the appropriate credits will be given.

(Students entering in 2025 or later)
S : 100 to 90 points A : 89 to 80 points B : 79 to 70 points C : 69 to 60 points G : Pass N : Certified
F : 59 to 0 points * : Unable to evaluate

(Students enrolled before 2024 )
A : 100 to 90 points B : 89 to 80 points C : 79 to 70 points D : 69 to 60 points G : Pass N : Certified
F : 59 to 0 points * : Unable to evaluate

(Note)
  1. If a grade cannot be given due to reasons such as not taking regular exams, not submitting reports, or not attending classes, the grade will be displayed as "*Grade not possible."
  2. For some courses, such as seminars, that cannot be graded by marks, a pass may be indicated by a "G."

Announcement of academic results

Academic results will be announced in September (first semester) and February (second semester). Please note that the method, date, and location of the results will be posted on UNIPA.
Depending on the instructor, mid-term presentations may also be held at appropriate times.
Furthermore, academic grades for quarterly courses (first half) will only be published online in June (first half of the first semester) and December (first half of the second semester).

GPA (Grade Point Average)

In 2010 (applied to students enrolled in 2010), our university introduced the GPA (Grade Point Average) system as an indicator to comprehensively evaluate academic performance. GPA is an indicator that judges not only the "quantity" of learning, such as the acquisition of credits, but also the "quality" of the learning, and can clearly show the level of learning achievement. In other words, by looking at the GPA value, students can understand the position of their own grades in more detail. We hope that students will use this number as an indicator to further promote independent learning, and that it will be effective in planning and taking responsibility for their course registration, and in actively studying the courses they have registered. Please note that long-term absences from classes, not taking regular exams or quizzes, or abandoning the acquisition of credits will ultimately lower the GPA value.

GPA notation and calculation

GPA is calculated by multiplying the grades for each course by the number of credits, and dividing the total by the total number of credits for registered courses, and then expressing the result to two decimal places (rounding off to the third decimal place).
GPA is calculated using the following three methods:
  1. T-GPA (total): Calculated based on the grades of all courses registered since enrollment
  2. S-GPA (current semester): Calculated based on the grades of only the courses registered in each semester
  3. Y-GPA (for the current year): Calculated based on the grades of courses registered for that year only

GPA formula

Courses that are not included in the GPA calculation include courses with grades of N or G, courses that are not included in the graduation requirements, and courses determined separately by each faculty.

Withdrawal from a registered course

This system allows students to decline courses during the course withdrawal period of each term at their own discretion if they apply for and attend classes, but find that the content of the classes is different from what they want to study, or they are unable to attend all of the courses they applied for, and therefore feel that it will be difficult to obtain credits. If you wish to apply for this system, please follow the procedures described in the "Course Application Guidelines" of each faculty. Courses that you decline will not be included in the calculation of your GPA . You can add credits for courses that you declined during the first term during the application period for course changes, etc. in the second term. However, you cannot add credits for courses that you declined during the course withdrawal acceptance period for second term courses or second half of the second term courses in the second term. Details are described in the "Course Application Guidelines" of each faculty.

Annual credit limit and use of GPA

For students with high GPAs and excellent grades, we will allow them to register for courses that exceed the "maximum number of credits per year" when they apply for courses the following year, depending on the faculty and year of enrollment. GPA values will also be used in the academic and course guidance given to students with poor grades. Details are listed in the "Course Application Guidelines" for each faculty.

Credit Accreditation

Qualifications acquired during enrollment may be recognized as credits for courses at this university. The necessary procedures will be instructed in the course enrollment guidance, so if you wish to have credits recognized, be sure to complete the procedures within the deadline.
