The teaching and training system at our university

Greetings from the Head of Teaching

Atsushi Mukuhira, Director of Academic Affairs/Chief of Teaching Staff
Atsushi Mukuhira, Director of Academic Affairs/Chief of Teaching Staff
The significance of establishing a teacher training course at our university
■Teacher training courses and classrooms
Osaka Institute of Technology has a "teacher training course" in three faculties (16 departments in total): the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Robotics and Design, and the Faculty of Information Science and Technology. The subjects for which you can actually obtain a teaching license vary by department, but looking at the whole picture, you will understand that the subjects (school types) are directly related to science and technology, as follows: Mathematics (junior high school, high school), Science (junior high school, high school), Information Science (high school), Industrial Science (high school), Technology* (junior high school).

In order to smoothly operate and maintain the teacher training courses for the various license subjects offered at the three campuses, the "Teacher Training Classroom" has been established within the Academic Affairs Department, and six full-time faculty members are affiliated with it. The faculty members are in charge of subjects related to the basic understanding of education and subjects of teaching methods, as well as practical aspects such as creating timetables and drafting curricula. In addition, they provide detailed support to students, such as supervision of teaching practice and nursing care experiences, guidance on taking teaching subjects, individual consultations on studies and career paths, guidance for taking teacher recruitment exams, and publication of the "Teacher Training Classroom Newsletter." In addition, the faculty members in charge of each subject of teaching methods are familiar with the educational field at junior high and high schools.

■ Obtaining a teaching license
To obtain a teaching license and stand at the front of a classroom as an educational staff member (teacher), you must first meet the graduation requirements of your respective department and then fulfill the requirements for completing the teacher training program. While some subjects (credits) that constitute the graduation requirements of each department are treated as subject-specific courses within the teacher training program, other subjects (such as teaching methods for specific subjects and subjects related to a fundamental understanding of education) must be taken separately within the teacher training program. Therefore, this creates an additional burden, but conversely, the sense of accomplishment is greater.
Recently, the number of students who obtain teaching licenses has fluctuated by year, but it has remained at about 50 per year. Also, over the past three years, on average, about 10 students have been teaching immediately after graduation each year.

■The significance of establishing a teacher training course at our university
In order for Japan, which is facing a declining population, to maintain a certain presence in the world, it is essential to secure high-quality human resources to support the development of science and technology. It is also important to maintain an environment in which all citizens can proactively use the results of science and technology as they advance. To achieve the latter in particular, it is necessary to work to cultivate interest in science and technology in primary and secondary education settings, and to improve the ability to grasp and utilize basic mechanisms.

As stated in the "Founding Spirit" and "Educational Philosophy and Policy, " Osaka Institute of Technology is promoting "engineer education" to develop human resources who directly support science and technology. Those who acquire wisdom and skills through learning and experience in such courses also have the potential to convey that experience and knowledge to children in simple terms and connect it to their interest. From this perspective, our School of Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Robotics and Design, and Faculty of Information Science and Technology have established teaching courses in mathematics, science, information, and industry and technology*, and are promoting social contributions by training junior high school and high school teachers.

In fact, our teacher training course has a history of over 70 years, which means that we have been producing excellent teachers continuously since shortly after the school was founded. Many of our graduates are still active in the field of education, especially in the area centered around Osaka Prefecture.

*The teacher training course for junior high school technology subjects was established in 2023, and as the years progress, the first graduates are scheduled to graduate at the end of 2026.

University-wide teaching and training system

In order to improve the quality of our teacher training courses, we have established a Teacher Training Course Committee within the university and hold regular meetings. The committee is chaired by the Dean of the Academic Affairs Department, and is made up of the Head of the Teaching Staff, the Head of the Department of General Education in the Faculty of Faculty of Engineering , the Head of the Division of Human Sciences, and full-time faculty members from the Teacher Training Department, the Faculty of Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Robotics and Design, and the Faculty of Information Science and Technology. The committee deliberates on the overall management of our teacher training courses.
The actual operation of the teacher training course is mainly carried out by the Academic Affairs Department, which consists of the Academic Affairs Division and the Teacher Training Classrooms, under the Teacher Training Course Committee. Of these, the Academic Affairs Division is mainly responsible for liaison and coordination with external institutions such as the Board of Education and teaching practice schools, providing teacher training course guidance, and handling other administrative tasks required for completing the teacher training course or obtaining a teaching license. In addition to teaching teaching subjects, the Teacher Training Classrooms also provide instruction for students, supervising teaching practice and nursing care experiences, individual consultations regarding completing teaching subjects, guidance for taking teacher recruitment exams, publishing the "Teacher Training Classroom Newsletter," and exchanging information with teacher training courses at other universities, while also providing educational guidance to students.

Messages from Teacher Training Department Faculty

Keiko Sakai

Teacher training courses always include psychology-related subjects such as "Educational Psychology" and "Educational Counseling." Through these subjects, we hope that students will acquire the ability to understand people, interact with them, and listen carefully to what others say. We also hope that students will learn that humans change and grow, that there are people in the world who think and feel differently, and that their own ways of thinking and feeling are not necessarily "normal."
Within psychology, I am particularly interested in individual differences. Since there are many different types of students in schools, I believe it is better for there to be many different types of teachers. Think about how you can use your own personality and abilities to benefit your students. Not only your strengths, but also your weaknesses, failures, and experiences of suffering are all assets that are unique to you. Cherishing yourself, including your weaknesses, and teaching your students how to transform past experiences into wisdom for living will surely be useful.

Yoshito Hikida Specialty: Education

In school education, which is based on human contact between teachers and students, instruction cannot be effective unless teachers themselves have the humanity to be respected and loved by students. Therefore, how students spend their student life is important.
For example, it is important to broaden your horizons by reading books on a wide range of subjects, not just your own field of expertise. Also, as teachers have jobs that require physical strength, it is a good idea to train your body. Furthermore, it is a good idea to acquire a sport or skill that can be called a "special skill," and I think it is also beneficial to participate in extracurricular activities such as club activities and volunteer work, as well as other experiences that can only be had during university.
Children are not attracted to teachers who only studied during their student days. Although taking teaching courses in addition to specialized courses in their faculty or department will be a heavy burden, we hope that students will use their time effectively to develop an appealing personality.

Ikuo Tatsumi Specialty: Industrial and Technology Education

What kind of image do you have of a school teacher? There are probably many different images, such as a teacher who is interesting to talk to, a strict teacher in club activities, or a teacher who admires specialized knowledge. The technical high school and junior high school technology teachers I teach are teachers who "make things" together with their students.
I have worked as a mechanical engineering teacher at a technical high school for around 18 years. I was mainly in charge of classes not found in regular high schools, such as "practical training" and "project research" to learn about full-scale manufacturing, and "drafting" to learn how to create accurate blueprints. In each class, I could see the students seriously engaging with manufacturing. Students grow through manufacturing. Inspiring experiences such as "becoming able to do something they couldn't do before thanks to skill" and "completing something without giving up through hard work" occur in daily classes. There are moving experiences that can only be seen by not just teaching, but also creating together with the students. If you are even slightly interested, I encourage you to take a teaching class.

Kensuke Tanaka Specialty: Science education

Having worked as a high school science teacher for many years, I currently provide support to those looking to enter the teaching profession, focusing on science education. Since the foundations of science education are observation and experimentation, the "Science Teaching Methods" course begins by developing students' ability to plan and teach observations and experiments, and provides a learning environment in a hands-on format. We have a wide range of necessary laboratory equipment and teaching tools, and are always available to answer any questions students may have. From the second semester of their third year, students will repeatedly create lesson plans and give mock lessons in preparation for their teaching practice. The main focus of these courses is to identify and improve upon issues that will arise when teaching, thereby building confidence.
Teachers are always at the forefront of education, interacting with students. Knowledge related to education is necessary, but it must be knowledge that can be put to use. It is important to always think about what you would do in a specific situation. We sincerely look forward to seeing all of you who are willing to learn on your own and become active as science teachers in the future take this course.

Toshiaki Muto Specialty: Mathematics education

Thank you to everyone who has taken even the slightest interest in our teacher training program and has visited this page. Educational reform is a hot topic these days, because education is about designing the future. Incidentally, in an age of rapid advances in generative AI, what's needed is not efficient solution-based instruction, but rather "proactive learning" in which students identify problems for themselves. Therefore, every hour in my classes, I ask students to write down and share their honest questions. Even questions that seem unsolvable are fine. By continuing to ask questions, you will likely begin to uncover your own interests and aspirations. Logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of new technologies will be highly sought after in the educational field of the future. There is surely something uniquely special about education that you, who are not in the Faculty of Education, can provide. I sincerely hope to work with you to explore and consider the future of education for the young people who will lead the next generation. Thank you very much.

Fukai Momo Specialization: Education

Take a moment to reflect on your school life so far. Many people may not immediately recall the faces of their teachers. Nevertheless, you can probably sense the presence of teachers in the background of those memorable moments.
Teachers are indispensable to both schools and students. From a professional standpoint, there are few jobs that allow you to witness someone's growth and development to such an extent. It's a fascinating profession where teachers themselves need to continuously grow, constantly seeking ways to guide students to "aha!" and "I understand!", and witnessing students gradually improve despite setbacks. However, it's also a responsible profession, as it can have a significant impact on someone's life. Teachers play a crucial role in the quality of students' school life.
The teacher training program is where you will build the foundation for standing at the front of a classroom. In order to acquire the skills to share the knowledge you have learned in your specialized subjects as a teacher, let's start by carefully studying and thinking about "education" through the teacher training courses.

Points to note regarding the enforcement of the "Act on the Prevention of Sexual Violence Against Children"

The "Act on the Prevention of Sexual Violence Against Children" will come into effect on December 25, 2026.
~Interns may also be required to have their criminal record for sex offenses verified.~

With the enforcement of the Child Sexual Violence Prevention Act, from December 25, 2026, businesses that provide education and childcare to infants, toddlers, elementary school students, junior high school students, high school students, etc., such as schools, daycare centers, and cram schools, will be required to take measures to prevent sexual violence.

[Required actions for businesses (schools, daycare centers, cram schools, etc.)]
● We will continue to work towards creating an environment that protects children from sexual violence.
● We will check whether individuals working in jobs involving children have a prior record of sex offenses.
● If there is a risk of sexual violence, we will not assign the individual to work in a position that involves contact with children.

At our university, students, especially those enrolled in teacher training programs, may be asked by the training facilities to confirm whether or not they have a criminal record for sexual offenses during their teaching practice. Please be aware of this point.

[Points to note regarding interns]
● If the internship plan includes one-on-one interactions with children, or if the internship period is considerably long, and it is determined that the internship involves dominance, continuity, and isolation towards the children, it may be necessary to check whether the intern has a prior record of sexual offenses. The final decision on whether or not to check for a prior record of sexual offenses will be made by the internship organization.
● If it is determined that confirmation of whether or not the intern has a criminal record for sex offenses is necessary, the intern will be required to submit their family register and other relevant documents to the Child and Family Agency.
● Individuals confirmed to have a prior conviction for a sex offense will not be permitted to participate in practical training involving contact with children. While the educational licenses and qualifications obtainable at this university are as listed above, if a prior conviction for a sex offense is confirmed, the individual will not be able to obtain these licenses or qualifications due to their inability to participate in practical training involving contact with children.
● When enrolling in the teacher training program, you will be required to submit a written pledge stating that you have no prior convictions for sex offenses, as well as a consent form allowing the employer to verify your prior convictions for sex offenses.

Please note that, in addition to the practical training related to the teacher training program mentioned above, students who are expected to participate in practical training (including internships) or volunteer activities that involve contact with children may be required to submit a written pledge stating that they have no prior convictions for sexual offenses, as well as a consent form for the employer to verify their prior convictions for sexual offenses.

Teacher training course self-examination and evaluation

Due to the amendment of the Enforcement Regulations of the Educational Personnel Certification Act, from April 1, 2022, accredited universities for teacher training programs are required to conduct self-inspection and evaluation of the curriculum, faculty organization, facilities and equipment status of their teacher training programs and to publish the results in order to achieve the teacher training goals of their teacher training programs (Article 22-7 and Article 22-8 of the Enforcement Regulations of the Educational Personnel Certification Act).

In light of our "philosophy for teacher training" and "purpose for establishing our teacher training courses," our university will independently inspect and evaluate the activities of our teacher training courses, and will use the results to strive for reform and improvement. We will also make the results publicly available in order to improve the quality of our teacher training courses.

(Article 22-7)
"Universities with two or more accredited courses shall promote organic cooperation between organizations within the university and establish an appropriate system so that the university can achieve its teacher training goals through the smooth and effective implementation of each of its accredited courses."

(Article 22-8)
"Self-inspection and evaluation reports for teacher training courses at universities with accredited courses are to be prepared by inspecting and evaluating the educational curriculum, faculty organization, teaching practice, and the status of facilities and equipment of the accredited courses at the university itself, and publishing the results."

Information on the Teacher Training Course Alumni Association "Yodotsumi Kibo"

Purpose of the Establishment

Osaka Institute of Technology's teacher training program has been producing teachers primarily in the Kinki region since the early 1950s.
During this time, many of our graduates have obtained teaching licenses in industry, information, science, and mathematics, and are highly regarded not only in their teaching profession but also in other fields. Furthermore, in response to social demand, we will open a junior high school technology teaching course in 2023, further contributing to the local community.
In this situation, from the standpoint of quality assurance and accountability for our graduates, it has become an urgent task for us to build close relationships with those who have obtained teaching licenses at our university and are now working actively.
Therefore, we established the Teacher Training Course Alumni Association "Yodo-Tsutei Kibo" in August 2023. The purpose of establishing this alumni association is the following three points.

1) To promote closer communication and information sharing through interaction among faculty, alumni, and current students involved in the university's teacher training program.
2) Reflect the information obtained through exchanges in teacher training or school education.
3) Students will understand the situation on-site and use that knowledge in their studies.

We hope that many people will support the purpose of this reunion and participate.

Origin of the alumni association name "Yodotsumi Kibo"

The first half of "Yodo-Tsutsumi Kibou" refers to the Yodo River levee, which may not be familiar to you, but it appears in the first verse of our student song, "The hall that stands on the banks of the eternal flow of the Yodo-Tsutsumi is the grandeur of our Institute of Technology." From this, we can see that the Yodo River levee, which can be seen from the classroom windows, was a source of comfort and encouragement for your predecessors, and was one of the emotional anchors for the predecessors who studied there. Furthermore, this levee certainly prevents the Yodo River from flooding and watches over the people around it, and it can be said to be a symbolic presence that our university is watching over you both during your time at the university and after you graduate.

On the other hand, the latter part of the word "kibou" has two meanings. The first is "hope" itself, which represents the hope and enthusiasm of those who have completed the teacher training course and obtained their teaching license for their teaching career. In addition, the zodiac sign for 2023, the year this alumni association was founded, is Mizunotou, which is pronounced Mizunotou in Japanese and Kibou in on-reading, meaning that new life is born and leaps up.

Therefore, in order to remember and pass on the year of our founding and its significance for a long time, we have combined the above elements and named our alumni association "Yodo-Tsutsumi Kibo."
